About Me

You’d think that a part-time accountant would have at least some insight into how business sales play out.

You’d think. In my case, you’d be wrong. I’m going to need a lot of help.

For obvious competitive reasons, I can’t reveal my name right now, but I’m transitioning from a business owner to a business seller, and I decided I wanted to document all of the stages of the process I am about to embark upon. So far, it seems like it’s going to be a long, long route. [Sigh]

As I said earlier, I’m an accountant, not a captain of industry. When my father died five years ago, I inherited his business, and acted as CFO, which I continue to do to this day. Unfortunately, while I am very thankful for the opportunities and experiences running a successful operation has given me, I just don’t have the drive or the desire to continue ownership of this company. My goal is to sell the business, so that I have a sizeable (hopefully) chunk of equity to pass on to my own children.

But how do I go about it?

I’ve been researching the topic extensively online, so I thought I’d be well equipped to handle the sale myself reasonably well. However, there are numerous pitfalls that I most likely will be utterly unable to navigate through since I have never sold a company before. What about non disclosure agreements? What about the employees? Should I worry about intellectual property protection? It didn’t take long before I came to the conclusion that I should probably have, at the very least, an M&A Advisor.

I’m optimistic about this chapter of my life, and I definitely hope that my experiences help others out there who are considering selling their own businesses. I plan on updating this blog as often as time allows as I go through the various hurdles in selling my company. I am doing this because after all my research I found very little out there written from a business owner’s perspective. So I hope this helps others. I will reveal as much as I can, however, some things that come up will be highly confidential so I will be discrete as possible to protect my business. But again, I hope this helps.
